Deeply connected to the pioneering spirit of the early twentieth century, the story of the Cartier Santos watch began more than one hundred and twenty years ago.

 

In 1904, Louis Cartier responded to a very specific request from Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed to read the time while piloting his aircraft without using his hands, without distraction and without relying on traditional pocket watches. From this necessity, the Cartier Santos was born: the first modern watch specifically designed to be worn on the wrist.

 

With this creation, Cartier introduced stylistic elements that were revolutionary at the time, such as the octagonal crown, the bezel with exposed screws, and the dial with clearly defined Roman numerals. These details not only ensured immediate legibility, but also gave rise to a new design language destined to profoundly influence masculine style for generations.

 

Today, the Maison celebrates this original intuition through two complementary collections: Santos-Dumont, which preserves the elegance of the original model, and Santos de Cartier, which interprets its spirit in a more contemporary key.

The Santos collection adapts its mechanics according to the function of each model: time-only versions often feature the 1847 MC, an in-house automatic calibre designed to ensure reliability and robustness in daily use. The Santos de Cartier Chronograph models are powered by the 1904-CH MC, dedicated to the chronograph complication. The skeleton line uses the manually wound 9611 MC, developed to showcase its openworked architecture. In the Santos-Dumont collection, movement choices vary by reference, between quartz and manual-winding, in line with the slimmer and more classic character of the line.
