The History of Jaeger-LeCoultre

The history of the Swiss Grand Maison.

Power, innovation, mechanics, performance: in a word, Jaeger-Le Coultre.

The roots of Grand Maison, as it is known among aficionados, go back to 1833, when Antoine Le Coultre in 1903 signed a partnership with Edmond Jaeger and opened his atelier in Le Sentier.
Since that date, there has been no end to the innovations and inventions of JLC, which has always sought (and succeeded) to be in the vanguard in terms of both movements and case shapes.

In 1903, for example, it had already created the world's smallest calibre and in 1929 the flattest, as well as the classical grandi complicazioni.

One of JLC's most recognisable shapes, however, is the legendary rectangular flip-up case of the Reverso, still copied but not equalled, which dates back to 1931, when the Officers of Her Majesty the Queen of England, for their polo matches, asked for a watch that could protect the crystal from accidental blows. A true Manufacture since its inception, JLC has long supplied calibres to many of the world’s most prestigious maisons: Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Cartier.

Fitting a movement from the Le Sentier maison is a source of pride for all. At Jaeger-Le Coultre the motto "One movement fits all" certainly does not apply: it is the only maison whose range of movements can truly keep pace with an exceptionally diverse and abundant production – varying in sizes, materials and shapes. The Reverso line alone, for example, offers more than ten different sizes across men’s and women’s models.

Other shapes, each with their dedicated calibres, can be found across the rest of the collection: the round and classically styled Master timepieces – simple, complicated, or ultra-thin, with manual or automatic winding; the robust and bold Compressor models; the Amvox series; and the grand and ultra-grand complications.

Another major invention by JLC is Atmos, an iconic table clock of the utmost prestige. Its patented movement requires no winding, as the clock’s mainspring is kept running by even the smallest fluctuation in temperature, thanks to a highly sophisticated mechanism.

In short, Jaeger-LeCoultre has created a true horological galaxy, all revolving around a single, brilliant star: excellence.
